About

Lullaby is a fulldome film created specifically for the immersive space of a planetarium. The film unfolds as a dreamlike visual journey in which a sleeping child, natural forms and cosmic imagery gradually merge into one another.

Rather than using the dome simply as a large screen, the work treats it as a continuous visual space surrounding the viewer. The imagery moves between the intimate scale of a cradle and the vastness of the night sky, allowing the film to shift almost imperceptibly between the personal and the cosmic.

Lullaby has been presented at international fulldome festivals and received awards in Japan and the United States.

Director, animator, neuroartist, screenwriter.

Concept

Lullaby began with the image of a five-year-old girl sleeping in a cradle woven from living roots. At first the scene appears intimate and almost tangible, but gradually the world around her begins to lose its certainty. The cradle, the roots and the surrounding landscape dissolve into stars and galaxies, revealing the image as something closer to a dream than to a physical place.
The lullaby acts as a thread between these scales: between childhood and something much older, between a private memory and a universe that seems to be dreaming the child in return.
I wanted the transition from one world to another to feel natural rather than spectacular. The film is built around the moment when a familiar image quietly ceases to obey ordinary reality, and the viewer realizes that the space around them has already become something else.

Process / Development

Lullaby was developed specifically for fulldome projection, so the production process began with the space of the dome rather than with a conventional rectangular frame. Scenes had to be composed as environments surrounding the viewer, with characters, landscape and movement distributed across a curved field of view.
The visual development combined painted and digitally generated source imagery with compositing, depth-based processing and 3D elements. Individual characters and environments were separated into masks and layers, while depth maps and geometric tests were used to explore how flat imagery could be transformed into spatial scenes.
Particular attention was given to the placement and deformation of figures across the dome. Elements that appear natural in a flat image can become distorted when projected overhead, so characters and landscapes were repeatedly tested in dome previews and adjusted for the viewer’s position.
The final film emerged through this combination of image construction, spatial testing and animation, with the transitions between intimate landscape, dream imagery and cosmic space designed as part of one continuous immersive environment.
